Arts and Recreation

Nature-based recreation—hiking, picnicking, camping, hunting, and fishing—is
abundantly available in Wythe County. Rural Retreat Lake and Campground is in
the western part of the county, and approximately 20 miles of the New River
Trail State Park lie in eastern Wythe County. Horseback riding can also be
enjoyed in several locations in the county.
Organized recreational programs and activities are provided by Wythe County
and by the Town of Wytheville. Many forms of indoor recreation and wellness
programs are available in the new Wytheville Community Center.
The county has two libraries, which offer adult and children’s programs, and
a number of
museums, most of them operated by the Town of Wytheville. The 1823
Haller-Gibboney Rock House Museum, the Thomas J. Boyd Museum, and the Heritage
Preservation Center are located in the town. The Stephen F. Austin Memorial is
in the eastern portion of the county.
A state-of-the-art
dinner theater facility in Wytheville features a wide
repertoire of Broadway hit musicals, and Wytheville Community College presents
amateur theatrical productions and blueglass music concerts on a regular basis.
Chautauqua Festival in the Park is held each June in Elizabeth Brown Memorial
Park in Wytheville, and the Rural Retreat Fair is held each summer.
Wythe County has well over a hundred churches representing various faiths and
doctrines.
